Artist Statement.
I’m a Brisbane based visual artist using text, drawings, film photography, and figurative painting. Observing rituals, constructed narratives, and metaphorical depictions, my work draws inspiration from a variety of sources, including religious art, iconography, high/lowbrow art and its traditions, and more obscure aspects of culture like memes and bathroom graffiti.
The majority of my most recent figurative paintings examine Australian identity from a post-colonial point of view, specifically thinking about the State of Queensland. While I am a self-taught painter, I reference the academic history of painting and employ more classic techniques and procedures while allowing for more abstract and unprompted components to exist.
Although it may appear that my work engages with a critical theory, for me, painting is primarily about the process. I view painting as a kind of alchemy that can be learned, and the process itself as both a trade and a meditation.
